You KAn Dance! – Creative Performance Project for Young Dancers

Held every Monday from 10th November to 15th December, this exciting workshop series invites participants to explore the expressive worlds of Lyrical and Contemporary dance—two powerful styles that encourage storytelling through movement. And at just £18 total (equivalent to £3 per session), it’s an accessible opportunity for children to discover the joy of dance in a supportive, fun setting.

Led by International Dance Artist James Doyle

Guiding the sessions is James Doyle, a seasoned performer and choreographer whose career spans internationally renowned dance companies. James has served as an associate artist at Broadway Dance Center in New York City and performed as a soloist at the Royal Ballet School in London. His wealth of experience and passion for nurturing young talent make him the perfect mentor for this creative journey.

James says “Through You KAn Dance!, we’re giving young people the chance to discover their own voice through movement, build confidence, and experience the magic of creating something together.”

What Will Participants Explore?

• Lyrical Dance: A hybrid style that blends jazz, ballet, and modern techniques, lyrical dance interprets lyrics through fluid, emotional movements. It’s deeply connected to music and storytelling, allowing dancers to express feelings and narratives with grace and intensity.
• Contemporary Dance: A broader, more experimental form, contemporary dance focuses on abstract and conceptual movement. It incorporates techniques like contract-release and floor work, and often uses a variety of music genres—or even silence—to explore emotion and theme beyond literal interpretation.

“These dance styles are incredibly special because they allow dancers to connect deeply with emotion and imagination,” says James Doyle. “Lyrical dance helps young people interpret music in a personal way—it’s like painting with movement. Contemporary dance, on the other hand, gives them the freedom to explore ideas and emotions without boundaries, offering a more open-ended approach to choreography. These styles encourage individuality, creativity, and confidence, which is exactly what You KAn Dance! is all about.”

Over Six Sessions, Young Participants Will:

• Learn new techniques and explore storytelling through movement
• Build confidence and spatial awareness
• Collaborate to choreograph an original group dance piece
• Make new friends in a creative, inclusive environment

No prior dance experience is needed—just enthusiasm and a willingness to move and learn! The project culminates in a group performance, giving participants the chance to showcase their creativity and growth to close friends and family.

Emma Goodson, Creative Development Coordinator for Kensington Arts, added, “Dance is such a powerful way for young people to express themselves and connect with others.
